October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The first Domestic Violence Awareness month was observed in October 1987. The idea evolved from the Day of Unity, which was recognized by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in 1981. The purpose of this day, which continues to be celebrated the first Monday in October, is to connect domestic violence advocates from across the nation.

The Day of Unity soon became an entire week of activities conducted to mourn those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, celebrate those who have survived domestic violence, and connect those who work to end domestic violence. Then, in 1989 the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The same legislation has passed each year thereafter, with the NCADV leading the way.

In our local community, the San Juan County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Task Force hosts a variety of events in October including trainings for service providers, awareness campaigns, and fundraisers. These events continue to grow each year with more and more participants.

Join us in this year’s events and help bring awareness to this devastating crime that affects 1.5 million people each year.

The San Juan County Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Task Force will be hosting its 3rd Annual A Healing ArtMosphere art exhibit and auction. This fundraiser, which takes place during the fall art walk in October, has been a success and continues to grow each year. Local artists have shown their support and generosity by donating pieces to be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting the task force. We would like to thank the artists who have donated works of art and individuals who have purchased items at our past events.

Please help the task force spread the word about this year’s event by sharing a link to this article.

Thank you!
